dog walking in UK in spring

There is a distinct shift in the air this week. The days are finally stretching out, the first bees are appearing in the garden, and the countryside is alive with the sound of new lambs. But for UK dog owners, this March brings more than just a change in weather.

As of the 18th March 2026 (Yes, that is today!) , the new Dogs (Protection of Livestock) (Amendment) Act is officially in force across England and Wales. At Dog Besties, we want to make sure you and your furry companions stay on the right side of the law while enjoying the beautiful British springtime.

What has changed?

The updated law is the most significant change to countryside dog rules in over 70 years. It isn't just about preventing attacks, the law now recognises that simply "worrying" or chasing livestock can cause devastating harm, such as miscarriages in pregnant ewes.

The penalties have also seen a serious upgrade. The previous cap on fines has been scrapped in favour of unlimited fines, and the police now have extended powers to seize dogs and even enter premises if they suspect an offence has occurred. It sounds daunting, but it’s all about protecting the welfare of farm animals and ensuring the countryside remains a welcoming place for everyone.

Keeping Your Bestie Safe and Legal

The easiest way to stay safe is to follow the "Lead Rule." Even if your dog has a perfect recall at the local park, the sight of a running lamb can trigger an instinct that is hard to ignore.

  • Use a fixed lead: On paths near livestock, keep your dog on a short, fixed lead rather than an extendable one to ensure maximum control.

  • Watch for "hidden" livestock: Farmers often move flocks overnight during lambing season. Just because a field was empty yesterday doesn't mean it’s empty today.

  • Check your boundaries: If your garden backs onto a field, ensure your fences are "spring-proof." Curious dogs are more likely to wander when the scent of new animals is in the air.

Beyond the Fields: Garden Hazards

While the new laws are a big focus this month, don't forget the hazards closer to home. March is when we see a spike in "fertiliser toxicosis" and bulb poisoning.

Many of our favourite spring blooms, like daffodils, tulips, and hyacinths, are toxic if your dog decides to do a bit of unauthorised gardening. The bulbs are particularly dangerous as they contain a concentrated dose of toxins. If you are busy sprucing up your garden this month, keep your cheeky pup entertained and away from the flower beds with a long-lasting chew or a puzzle toy indoors.
